We know you have been waiting for very long for this issue - - should have had this out for holiday reading as we have a lot of good stuff! Apologies for the delay on this occassion...

In this issue we focus on the recent sentencing on Dr. Binayak Sen. How do we make sense of it? Awaaz tries to present some of the thoughts of its community...

  • A reflection on the Binayak Sen "incident" and the silence of our elite by Vinay Bhat

Welcome to the Third Issue of Boston Awaaz

In this issue we mark the passing away of a fine scholar and champion of justice in Dr. Omar Khalidi who worked for years at MIT. His ceaseless efforts to get to the bottom of the issues of communalism in India have inspired many.

We also feature articles by some of our community members:

The regular musings by Jaspal Singh
A reflection on the Indian state by Vinay Bhat
A take on Carbon Trading by Rajasekhar Jammalmadaka (Raju)
and an op-ed piece on the forthcoming 26th anniversary of the Bhopal gas disaster.

Welcome to second issue of Boston Awaaz

Welcome friends and comrades. This is the second edition of the Boston Awaaz. We started Awaaz to have a platform to express our thoughts in writing and to be able to share among friends. We do wish to promote healthy, incisive dialog, even if it is with oneself in the form of a reflection. We do not have any definite shape in mind yet but we do have certain aims in mind. We hope we will gradually take shape as a thought-provoking avenue, local yet very global!

In this issue, please find:

  • poems: two on the festival of Diwali and its deeper significance; one on life's journey.
  • A writeup on the contradictions of urbanization in non-western milieus.
  • A report on the visit by activists Bhargavi Rao and Leo Saldhana of the Environment Support Group to Boston
  • A variety of reflections on events around us.
  • A take on the strident nature of right-wing talk-shows.
Check out the current issue of Nov 15!

Also, check out our very first issue on the right hand column.

We welcome contributions -- so please feel free to mail them to bostonawaaz@gmail.com: short pieces as text files (.doc/.odt/.txt).
Looking forward to shared community of thought and writing.
And, yes, ideas/help regarding the very format of our journal are most welcome too.

In Solidarity and in Hope
The Boston Awaaz team.
